With summer coming to an end, it's more important now than ever to get the kids outside. The Great Escape has a great variety of playsets to keep the kids entertained, but how do you create an outdoor play area that's safe for them as well? Read on for a few tips:
Tip #1: Use shredded bark, mulch, wood chips, fine sand or fine gravel for acceptable shock absorbing surfaces.
Tip #2: Make sure the shock absorbing material extends a minimum of six feet in all directions from the perimeter of stationary equipment. For swings, make sure the material extends a minimum of 16 feet in the front and rear.
Tip #3: Place the equipment on level ground. An uneven surface prohibits the set from going together smoothly.
Tip #4: Don't let children play on the set until it is fully assembled.
Tip #5: Enforce a set of safety rules with the children to ensure they're playing safe. Rules to consider including: not using the equipment in a manner other than intended; never crawl or walk across the monkey bars; avoid loose clothing when playing on the set, do not walk in front of or behind moving items like swings.
It is suggested that children should be supervised at all times while playing on a playset, especially at younger ages. Playsets can be great fun but it's always important to remember to stay safe.
