Apartment Living? No Problem. You can still have the patio of your dreams.

Not everyone has big backyards! Some of us have to make do with what we’ve got. And if you’re living in an apartment building, that means balconies!

So, what’s an apartment-living-person to do? How do you design a small area to feel like a retreat?

Here are some ideas that can help you create the patio of your dreams.

  • Bring the Green

Just because you don’t have a backyard doesn’t mean you need to forgo plants! Make your patio feel like a lush oasis with some well positioned plants. We like the idea of having a hanging herb garden if there’s room on the wall of your patio. Or, you can never go wrong with some flowers!

  • Light it Up

With the simple addition of some string lights, your patio will look like it fell out of a storybook. They produce a soft, romantic aura. Or, add lights that are lower to the ground to give the patio the appearance of looking larger.

  • Get a rug

A small area rug can help make your patio feel like a cohesive, well-designed space. Try to select a durable rug, which ties in with the colors of your patio furniture or décor.

  • Make it the coolest gin-joint in town

Get the most out of your patio and make it a place where you would want to have a drink and watch the sunset after a long day.

Consider getting a table, some chairs and small or rolling bar cart. The cart is a classy touch that’s sure to impress guests when you’re entertaining.

  • Get furniture that’s going to work double-duty

Small spaces require furniture that can multi-task! Folding furniture is a nice idea if you’d like the area kept clear when you’re not using it. You might also want to think about getting seating that doubles as storage. Corner shelving is never a bad idea if you want to make sure you’re maximizing every inch of the area.

  • Make your patio your own private resort

You can keep nosey neighbors at bay by putting up bamboo or other tall plants. Use your greenery to give you a little extra privacy! Another option is an outdoor curtain. You can pull it closed when you’re feeling a little shy or open it up when it’s time to socialize!

  • Future so bright, you’re going to need shades

Don’t let rain stop you from enjoying your patio! Get an outdoor umbrella to help keep dry on those wet days.

You’ll be thankful to have it in the summer months when you want to lounge on your balcony but don’t want to worry about sunburn or having constant sun in your eyes.
