About Our Timber - Ipé

The background of Ipé

With over five million acres (twice the size of Yellowstone National Park) of FSC® certified forest under management, Bolivia is the world's leader in sustainable management of natural tropical forest. CIMAL/IMR, the manufacturer of the entire Jensen Leisure Furniture Ipé collection, is directly responsible for the management of approximately half of this area.

The Chiquitania Forest Reserve - Jensen Ipé comes from the 2,120,000 acre CIMAL/IMR Chiquitania forest reserve in Eastern Bolivia. The Chiquitania reserve is a unique formation of natural tropical dry forest. It is located in the southwest corner of the Amazon basin, lying directly west of the Brazilian Pantanal, the world’s largest continguous wetland. The Chiquitania Forest provides critical habitat for many rare and endangered animals, including the Harpy Eagle, Jaguar, the Howler Monkey, and numerous species of neotropical migratory birds.

Because of the nature of tropical dry forest, trees here grow very slowly. Consequently, some of the world's strongest and most durable woods come from the Chiquitania Forest. Ipé (also know as Tajibo in Bolivia), is among the most abundant tree species in these forests.

A strikingly beautiful brown color, Jensen Ipé weathers with strength and elegance.

CIMAL/IMR foresters carefully manage the Ipé in their forest reserves according to the demanding criteria of the Forest Stewardship Council™. Tree harvesting is planned to minimize impacts and preserve the forest’s natural biological diversity.

Ipé is incredibly strong and dense, with very high wear durability. A handsome chocolate-brown when new, the sun gracefully transforms Ipé to a mature, elegant silver patina.

One fantastic example of the durability of these timbers are the Ipé posts and beams found in the original Jesuit missions in Chiquitania dating from the 18th century. After more than 200 years in service these structural members are still sound.

Other applications where the strength and durability of Ipé has been long recognized are in the deck boards of the historic Solferino Footbridge which crosses the Seine River in central Paris, in the famous boardwalk at Atlantic City, NJ, and in the wood slats in all of New York City park benches.

Jensen Leisure Furniture produces heirloom furniture that will be handed down through generations. Our specifications ensure that your furniture will endure the extremities of nature and repeated sittings throughout a lifetime of reading, dining, and gardenside solitude. Longevity begins with the quality of our timber.

The Ipe timber that goes into Jensen Leisure Furniture is certified by Rainforest Alliance as 100% FSC® Pure. Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC) certification is the global "gold standard" in independent, third-party forest certification. It guarantees that the wood contained in our furniture comes from well-managed forests. The FSC logo and "Chain of Custody" number branded on Jensen products allows you to track the wood back to the forest where it originated.

Our Ipe timber comes from the Chiquitania tropical dry forests of Bolivia. Because of the nature of these forests, trees grow very slowly, producing some of the world's strongest and most durable timber species. Our trees are allowed to grow to over 100 years old before being carefully harvested.

Jensen Leisure Furniture is made of 100% heartwood. The heartwood portion of a log is the most dimensionally stable and is only found in slow-growing, century old trees. The exclusive use of heartwood in outdoor furniture is critical for maintaining the long-term strength and integrity of the mortise and tenon joinery throughout the seasonal extremities of freeze and thaw, and extended wet and dry periods.

Another key factor determining how a wood will behave in the out-of-doors, is the degree of care taken when drying the wood. All our wood is carefully kiln dried for periods ranging from four to eight weeks to reduce the moisture content from 50% to 12%. This slow drying and conditioning process also relaxes the natural tensions in the wood to assure years of outdoor use in a wide range of climates.

Jensen Leisure Furniture is designed with heavy dimensioned components for greater strength and stability. Our designers combine innovation, engineering, and craftsmanship to create new and enduring classic designs. As an added security, each piece of Jensen Leisure Furniture has been laboratory-tested to the demanding specifications of contract or commercial applications. Contract specifications far exceed the standards for common residential use.

Jensen furniture is crafted using traditional interlocking mortise and tenon, and dowelled joinery that form rock solid connections. Engineered to extremely tight tolerances through CNC technology, the individual furniture components are permanently attached with snug, moisture-sealed joints. This level of craftsmanship prevents problems such as wobbling, making the furniture safe and stable during a lifetime of use.

The glass hand finish of Jensen furniture is possible due to the dense nature of Ipe wood and our unique cross-grain sanding technique. Sanding cross-grain prevents the lifting of surface micro-fibers and preserves a smooth feel as the wood weathers out-of-doors.

After a completed bench or table has been sanded and had its oil finish applied, it is test-assembled and receives a thorough final inspection to ensure that each item meets our rigorous quality specifications.
